How are playoff seeding ties broken?
Playoff seeding ties are broken in the following order:
1. Head-to-Head Result
If the tied teams played each other during the season, the winner of that matchup receives the higher seed.
Note: Teams may occasionally play each other more than once during a season.
2. Wins Above the Tie
If the tie is not resolved by head-to-head results, the team with the strongest wins against higher-seeded teams earns the higher seed.
3. Wins Below the Tie
If still tied, the team with more wins against lower-seeded teams earns the higher seed.
This situation most often occurs among mid- to lower-seeded teams.
4. Coin Toss / Names Drawn
If all other tie-breaking procedures are exhausted and the tie still cannot be broken, a random selection method (coin toss or drawing names) will determine the higher seed.
